The first in a series of publications on the immigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel, describing factors that influenced Israel’s position after the establishment of the state. Concern for a persecuted community in danger of extinction due to Christian missionary activity, alongside doubts about their Jewish identity made it difficult for decision makers to reach a stand. They were also influenced by political and security considerations. These contradictory forces prevented a decision until the ruling of Sephardi Chief Rabbi Ovadia Yosef in 1973.
