“An honourable peace, a balanced peace, a peace that will last”. With these words, King Hussein of Jordan summed up his and Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin’s mutual commitment to the peace agreement, as, on November 10, 1994, the two leaders exchanged the instruments of ratification of the treaty. On this occasion, at Beit Gabriel on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, Rabin said, “This is the most beautiful scene for the most beautiful act” – the establishment of the “structure of peace” so that its implementation could be ensured.
To mark the 30th anniversary of the signing of the agreement, the Israel State Archives has prepared a publication based on newly declassified files on the contacts between Israel and Jordan which led to it. The publication, which includes 41 documents selected from these files, describes the negotiations from September 1993 to the end of 1994. See the publication on our Hebrew website to view all the documents.
In addition to a historical introduction, which briefly describes the obstacles that hindered the negotiations and the solutions that were found, a timeline helps the reader to understand the sequence of events leading up to the signing of the agreement and the connection with other events that occurred at the same time.
