Introduction

This publication presents several chapters from the life of Yitzhak Rabin (1922-1995), the fifth Prime Minister of Israel. Each stage of Rabin’s life was an expression of his commitment to the state and shaped him as a leader: as a  fighter in the pre-state Palmach, as IDF chief of staff, as Israel’s ambassador to the United States, studying policy making and the global balance of power, as minister of defence in the National Unity governments, and as prime minister (1974-1977, 1995-1992).

Rabin took part in breaking the siege on Jerusalem during the War of Independence and in the victory in the Six Day War. He strengthened ties with the American Administration as ambassador and led the signing of the interim agreement with Egypt during his first term as prime minister and the signing of the peace treaty with Jordan during his second term.

An important and controversial issue that Rabin dealt with was the peace process with the Palestinians, which led to the Oslo Accords.

Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated on November 4, 1995 at a rally for peace.
